Daughter's... Things I LOVE

"Sometimes when I need a miracle, I look into my daughter's eyes, and realize I've already created one".
                                                                                                                                                  Unknown

Isn't it amazing the love that a daughter brings into your life.  They are so adorable when they're little.  We get to dress them up and put bows in their hair.  Watch them take their first steps, first day of school, first cheerleading tryouts, first boyfriend,  first day of college and their wedding.  Don't get me wrong there were those teenage years.  Somehow you spend 16 years and it is your duty to watch over them 24/7.  Then the teenager comes out and they think they were hatched not birthed.  How could you be so smart for 16 years then become the biggest dumbass on the planet until oh I say about 21.
However..
When it comes to daughters I hit the mother of all the jackpots, the lottery, and the pot of gold all rolled up into one. Channa is the most beautiful person inside and out that I know.  She makes me laugh at the most inappropriate times over the most inappropriate subjects.  We can talk about The Real Housewives of anything for an hour, really almost all reality TV.
But here is the thing I want you to know about my Channa.  She is an angel plain and simple.  When Chase was killed (I will go into that another time) she became the parent.  She is who went to the funeral home because I couldn't do it.  She is the one who held everything together while I fell apart.  She is the strongest person I know, even though I know she was hurting just as bad.
Then there was Truett.  As I like to call him the Tasmanian Angel.  Not only did Channa have to have emergency C-section because his heart rate was 280, she had to stay in Abilene while she watched her newborn son and husband fly away in a helicopter to Cook Childern's Hosptial in Ft. Worth. She stayed one night then we drove 2 1/2 hours to Ft. Worth.  Yes I said she had a emergency C-section.  They spent 26 days in the NICU and she never left his side.  Truett is a thriving, total boy, hell on wheels, and an amazing 3 year old now.  Again she is the strongest person I know.
The day I was diagnosed with the Shit Ass Disease she drove 3 1/2 hours to my appointment.  I tried for weeks to talk her out of coming  because I knew it wasn't going to be good.  Oh no not her, she was coming period. I think watching the tears roll down her face was harder than hearing you have the Shit Ass Disease.  But here is the thing.  She got in her car drove the 3 1/2 hours home, decided she was going to sell her house and move close to me.  It took her less than 2 weeks to sell her house. Now her husband owns a restaurant in Brownwood, so this meant he would have to find a place to live in Brownwood.  He would have to stay in Brownwood until the restaurant sells.  So she sold her house, picked up everything she owns, moved her and a 4 and 2 year old to McKinney.  She has come to every doctor's appointment loaded with questions only a doctor can appreciate.  Other than she asked my current doctor about marijuana prescriptions.  If you knew how straight laced Channa is you would find the humor in it. We went to Houston to Dr. Appel for a second opinion.  He diagnosed the Shit Ass Disease in about twenty seconds.  But it was a three day evaluation.  I was poked, prodded, shocked, and stabbed repeatedly (they really should have laws against this).  Anyway Dr. Appel would come in everyday with his staff and Channa would drill him with questions. I had no idea what she was talking about.  He LOVED it.  He would come in everyday and ask what she had for him today.

She has come to every 4 hour clinic with me and sat there like a trooper, and of course had her list of questions.  She brings my beautiful grandkids over almost everyday to see me.  She cooks, shops, and makes me go to lunch even if I don't want to.  She does all this and is a single parent five days a week (Justin comes in on the weekends).  The funny thing is she doesn't see how special she is.  I'm pretty sure not every daughter would do what she has done and continues to do.

The most beautiful person I know inside and out.

My best friend.

Grandbabies ...Things I LOVE

"I don't spoil my grandkids, I'm just very accommodating"
                                                                            Unknown

Emerson Chase

Oh grandbabies and what they bring to your life.  Being a designer it started the minute we knew it was going to be a girl.  An overly expensive crib, window treatments and walls to die for.  I would do it all over again tomorrow.  I was in the room when Channa gave birth to Emerson. After three hours of pushing this gorgeous baby girl came into my life.  Of course I have my iPhone snapping photos, then run out into the hallway to show everyone.  Screw Channa and Justin I have to show off my little girl.  Well after showing off, I ran back into to the room and the nurse handed her to me.  If you haven't become a grandparent yet, well then just hold on because you will go to your knees, snot rolling down your face crying and your heart is filled with so much love you want to burst right out of your sweatpants.  Everything they do is brilliant.  Throw up... brilliant, pass gas.... brilliant, shoot poop across the room, brilliant because that's when their moms have to take over.
Emerson lived so far away I only got to see her once a month so no rules applied.  She wanted me to stand on my head and spit quarters....done.  They are so funny, so honest and love you so unconditionally.  I mean really you walk in the door and their little faces light up and they run to you or sometimes right past you to get to the pile of new toys you've brought them.  You become their personal play toy and love every second of it.  Then she started pre-school and there are Christmas programs, Valentine parties, Halloween, on and on and of course she is the cutest kid in the room.  She had her first dance recital and said, "Cici what are you going to wear"?  I told her a dress or what ever I was wearing and looked at me stone serious and said, "Cause you can't wear your pajamas!"  Now she is 5 and I don't know how that is even possible. She loves to plan a party whether it is for Rapunzel's birthday or a football party for her Dad.  She tells me she loves my "squishy arms and neck",  gee thanks. I cut my hair off and she reminds me on a daily basis she hates it.  Then there is my new glasses, I can wear them to read the menu but take them off otherwise.  Then out of the blue I get a voice message, "I love you and miss you  CiCi" when I saw her an hour ago.

Two weeks old. Ahhhhhh

In her mama's wedding gown.

 Truett Grahm
I didn't quite make it to Truett's birth because the little shit had a heart rate of 280 and they had to do an emergency C-section a few weeks early. Once I finally got to the hospital to see him it was love at first site.  Poor little guy had tubes everywhere, and was in the NICU for 26 days.  Talk about a roller coaster. He aged me twenty years.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  He then had back surgery at 10 months old, and he was up jumping up and down in the hospital crib the next day.  That pretty much describes Truett.  Superman and he's perfect!  He is now 3 and one of the funniest humans on the planet.  Soooo he starts saying, "hello gorgeous" which is pretty cute on its own.  He decides to go open my wine fridge, I of course say no Truett. He continues to open and close it and starts saying, "hello gorgeous wine".  I'm not sure what's more disturbing, hello gorgeous wine or that there is still wine in the fridge.  Then he locks himself in the bathroom, turns on the water, and as the bathroom is in flood mode, his parents are pounding on the door saying "OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW",  he simply replies, "no guys".  Of course as a grandparent that is the funniest thing I've ever heard.. His parents not so much.

Precious baby boy!

Handsome as handsome can be.

My babies.

So I wish each and every single one of you the love of being a CiCi.

Wine Oh Wine...Things I love

"Wine is just a conversation waiting to happen"
                                                   Jessica Altieri

Besides it helped cause me to fall out of an Escalade, wine is one of my things I love.  As my granddaughter calls it "Cici Water".  I only started drinking wine five or six years ago and my question is what the hell took so long?  A doctor told a fellow Shit Ass Disease patient, "If you don't drink you might want to start!"  Well that is the best advice I've heard from a doctor yet. Don't get me wrong I only drink two glasses a day.  However the bottles keep getting smaller, which is a big complaint of mine to the wine industry.  I use to get four glasses out of a bottle and now I only get two. WTF!  It's a conspiracy I thought you should know about.
The great thing about wine is the pairings.  Riesling with Peeps, Merlot with Cheetos, Chardonnay with tacos.  The beauty is you can mix up the pairings.  I personally like Chardy with Cheetos but on an odd day I might have Chardy with Mac and Cheese!
I recently watched a documentary called Somm.  Its a great documentary about four sommeliers attempting to pass the prestigious Master Sommelier exam.  This is a test with one of the lowest pass rates in the world.  Since its inception 40 years ago only 200 candidates have reached the Master level.  I highly recommended a Pinot Noir paired with Velvetta cheese dip with a scoop of guacamole and chips while watching TV.
Wine was used for medicinal purposes.  Hippocrates was a proponent of wine for medicinal purposes.  He prescribed it as a remedy for everything from the pain of childbirth to diarrhea. He also advocated its use as a disinfect for wounds.  The French have low rates of heart disease even though they have a diet high in fat and diary products like cheese (not sure Velvetta is one of their cheeses).  One reason is their consumption of red wine.
So whether you consume wine for medicinal purposes, fall out of an Escalade (highly don't recommend), or to have a beverage to quench your thirst while busting out a bag of Cheetos...

..
My evening glass of wine.

Spain and Gaudi...Things I Love

"I would not be able to explain to anyone my artistic concepts"
                                                                         Antoni Gaudi

Right before Chase left for college we went to the Kimball Art Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas to see the Barnes Collection. It's a fabulous exhibit which has a whole story of its own.  Anyway we came upon Pablo Picasso's The Ascetic (L'Ascete), 1903. We were standing there for a few minutes and I looked up at Chase, and he had a tear in his eye.  I thought at that moment man I wish there was a piece of  art would move me like that.  Ten years later I took a trip to Spain and couldn't wait to see the Sagrada Familia. when I got there I had my moment. I got out of the car looked up I and got the tear in my eye.  I can die now.  What is so amazing to me is that Gaudi started on this project in 1883. It's not even that I love the architecture as much as I love the mind behind it. I don't know if they had LSD back then but if they did...Gaudi's melting Montjuic stone building with its Evangelist's spires, the Nativity façade, to the interior that was designed to look like trees and branches is what is took to bring a tear to my eye.  Time Magazine called it 'sensual, spiritual, whimsical, exuberant' on the other hand British historian Gerald Brenan stated about the building "Not even in the European architecture of the period can one discover anything so vulgar or pretentious." How do you really feel Gerald?  It was started in 1883 and they are projecting it to be done in 2026 - 2028!  Whether you are Time Magazine or have Gerald Brenan's point of view it is worth the ride to look into it.

            Interior to mimic trees.

I just don't understand the hard edges on the Passion facade.

Now here is another reason I love Gaudi's mind.  This is Casa Batllo.  It is located in the very heart of Passeig de Gracia.  You look at this building and obviously see Gaudi.  Broken tiles, curves, odd windows but what you don't see (or least I didn't) is that the balconies are skulls and the top cross, represents the lance of Saint George (patron saint of Catalonia, Gaudi's home), which has been plunged into the back of a dragon.  SHUT UP!!!

What a great trip to Spain and France with a great friend.  Timing couldn't have been better either.  I was in the process of designing a Spanish house for a client in Dallas.  I call him my crotchety, bitter, pissed off at the world old man, and I loved, loved, loved working for him. In the beginning of the process I showed him some fabrics.  He looked at me and said, "Are these fabrics expensive?", to which I replied, "why do you want cheap fabrics"?  He laughed and said, "What I want is a designer who isn't a smart ass, but I guess it's too late for that".  I continued to do work for him for ten years.  Here are a few photos of his house.

Falling....Things I Hate

"Your illness does not define you.  Your strength and courage does"                                                                                                                                                  Unknown

The purpose of this blog isn't the Shit Ass Disease, it' is part of it but it is mainly a way for Emerson
and Truett to know me a little better when they get older, to explore my love and dislikes (like that

needs exploring) and to share my ride through life. that I know about the Shit Ass Disease. I asked Dr. Appel a Shit Ass Disease specialist in Houston,Texas what causes the Shit Ass Disease?  Now Dr. Appel is 82 years old and has dedicated his life tothe Shit Ass Disease and teaching.  He looked at the two poor interns who were shaking in their Dansko's and asked Dr. Whatever, can you answer Mrs. Cook's question?  Dr. Whatever was NOT expecting to be asked a question (found out later he was new)  stood there a little dumbfounded then said he didn't know.  Dr. Appel looked at intern number two, "Dr. Whatever number two, what causes the Shit Ass Disease"? Dr. Whatever went into a long story of well we  do not know. WRONG Dr. Appel gently said.  He looked at me and said people who get the Shit Ass Disease have one Shit Ass Disease gene.  Other disease's have many genes.  He went on to say this, it is the environment.  He said the gene loads the gun the environment pulls the trigger.  That pretty much sums it up in my opinion. You had to feel sorry for the poor interns that shook every time they were in the room with Dr. Appel but we would crack up every time they left the room.

Falling.  You have to find humor in the falling.  My first fall came after a three hour wine lunch with a dear friend of mine Dar.  She pulled up in front of my house in her ginormous Escalade to drop me off. I opened the door, stepped out and went strait to my ass. I'm sure the neighbors were entertained if nothing else. Sprained my foot then enters the crutches.

My next fall was much more graceful.  It was a beautiful day, thought I would pour a nice full glass of wine and go get in the pool.  I was too cool for school. Did I mention there is four steps down to my pool? So I take the first step and next thing I know I am flying down the stairs, my wine glass is flying through the air and there I am on my ass again. Now there is two disturbing things about this fall. One it was a full glass of wine. Was is the operative word here. Two I was home alone and no one saw the fall.  I personally gave it a 10 but that's like the fish that was THIS big! Enters the "Rollator".  The next fall was pretty graceful as well. I simply got out of bed and went strait to the floor.  I'm sure my husband thought it was the ambien so he just looked at me like stop taking pills (whatever). Re-sprained my foot and thought I broke my knee,

Enters the wheelchair.  I find much comfort in the wheelchair knowing I am probably not going to fall from it.
